Horse work

horsework

In a Horse Work session, you get a guided experience with a herd of horses.

We work outdoors, in a corral, with the horses free to move with and around you as we map out the patterns of your heart and the systems you live, work and play in. We’ll use meditation, exercises and Constellation work (representational mapping) for you to uncover new and relevant information, reorient yourself and reposition others in your life.

REMOTE

Group Work is at the heart of this work. In a group, other members can step in to represent you, gifting you the benefit of sight with distance.
Find an upcoming group to join here, and join us for a Monthly Group, offered by donation.

Individual sessions focus on just you. You are welcome to have a solo experience, to have trusted friends join you, as representatives to witness your movements.
Offered on-site and remotely.

Come see us on the ranch! Experience the magic of the Mustangs and the beauty of Ojai, CA. Located about 75-90 minutes north of Los Angeles on a secluded ranch with mountain and valley views.
Airbnb's and hotels are available nearby to extend it beyond a day trip.

Horse Work sessions and Constellation work are just as powerful in a remote, online setting. We'll use our Systemic Constellations platform or found objects in your space to create your experience. It rings true, every time.
And the horses also like to show up remotely!

Working with horses in person is a powerful experience, hard to put into words. Come experience it for yourself.

If you'd prefer not to work with the horses, we offer this work as Nature Constellations. These can take place on your land, in your workplace, and anywhere you would like to gather.

When can I use a Horse Work session?

Anytime!
Horse Work is particularly valuable for joining, leaving and achieving milestones. For example, a Horse Work session when you are launching an idea, project or beginning a new romantic relationship can surface information that could be obscured simply by the excitement of something new! If you’re selling your company, leaving a position or ending a relationship, no matter how long, a session can show you patterns that are ready to be put to rest in your transition so you don’t bring them to your next iteration. They are wonderful milestone markers for anniversaries, birthdays or when you are seeking clarity in your life.

If you’d like a chat about whether a Horse Work session is right for you, please find time on my calendar here! I'd love to talk with you.

What is a Systemic Constellation?

A constellation reveals invisible dynamics in systems like families or businesses through physical representation. Participants or objects stand in for elements of your situation, creating a living map that exposes hidden loyalties, blocks, and potential solutions. Super simple tools, like creating an order, establishing a sense of belonging, and finding moments of accepting and acknowledging ‘what is’, create power shifts in our fields that can reverberate far beyond the experience.

Systemic Constellations, often called Family Constellations or Family Systems Constellations, were created by Bert Hellenger. He wove his experiences as a trained psychotherapist, priest, shamanism studies, Gestalt approaches, and years of living and learning from the Zulu people’s in South Africa into a phenomenological experience that he calls Constellations. In his native language, German, Constellations can be translated into English as “a combination, a lineup” so it refers to the placement of things in an order. Much of this approach is unusual for it’s inclusivity, like of ancestors, countries of origin and our original systems: Our Families of Origin. The systemic approach acknowledges and works with the awareness of systems as living configurations with an intelligence and implicit and explicit rules that we are loyal to.

Why add horses into constellation work?

Horses instantly reflect your authentic emotional state – without judgment. They exhibit a high degree of sensitivity to human emotional states (see Pub-Med articles here for the scientific research and discussion on equine assisted experiences). There’s various reasons that have been studied for this, including: their larger electromagnetic field influences ours and we entrain to their greater levels of coherence; we match heart rate variability; they can mirror our authentic feelings and embody them so that we then observe the reflection. Some authors relate this to the horse’s role as “non-prey animals” in that they are exceptionally attuned to their surroundings since they are not predators like us. Others posit it as interspecies evolution towards cooperation and communication for the benefit of both our species.

I also like to take a very practical approach and consider how a horse’s large ears can hear so much better than mine, perhaps they can even hear my heartbeat. Their large nostrils smell so much better than mine, so perhaps they can smell aspects present in my body, similar to how dogs and rats have been trained to sniff out diseases in humans. And their eyes, the largest eye-to-body ratio of land mammals, can see almost 365 degrees, with 2 blind spots just in front of their heads and behind their tails. So they can visually observe my micro-expressions, movements and posture. I notice physical and emotional differences when I maintain a calm, regulated nervous system with my herd – honoring their sensitivity and awareness of me, with my own sensitivity and awareness of them. This feels like loving, respectful mutual care.

What should I bring?

For horse or nature sessions where we will be out of doors, wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather, sun protection like a hat or sunscreen, please wear closed-toe shoes (but not steel toes). Bring water for your own comfort, and a journal to write or draw in if you’d like to capture your experience.
Most importantly is a willingness to try this work, and the possibility of having a more open heart and a different perspective afterwards. You’re invited to bring any personal objects relevant to your intention if you desire.
(Please leave your pups at home! This is an experience where I invite you to be fully present for it.)
For online sessions, please be in a space where you can relax uninterrupted and are able to be on camera for the entirety of our time together.

How do I explain my experience to other people?

You’re invited to try not to explain your experience. For at least 3 days, we encourage you to not describe it. Why? Translating the shifts that occur during a Horse Work session from the felt experience into words can have a limiting effect on it. And explaining the process may disrupt and otherwise morph your initial memory of the experience.

As you reflect on your session, consider 3 things:
  1. What aspects of this experience would I like to keep as sacred for myself, not to be shared with others?
  2. What are one to two major insights or revelations I experienced during this Horse Work session?
  3. What do I want to remember about it?

Perhaps you want to remember the moment a hawk flew overhead and called out right as you mentioned a dream you have, or when a horse chose to walk with you as you moved from one location to another. Keep these moments close to your heart. They matter and often their significance will unfold over time.

What is post-HorseWork integration like?

Shifts may unfold over days or weeks, as new perspectives and ways of relating emerge, either gradually or in lightbulb a-ha moments! Journaling, meditating, exercising, being with others, time in nature and healthy alone time all are great practices for integration and a good life. As you reflect, I invite you to return to you insights from your session at least weekly. Has anything emerged this week that you would put on your map? Would you like to move pieces?

I offer a follow-up phone call within a week of your session! Please book it here.

Should I book an individual or a group HorseWork session?

Individual sessions offer privacy and focused attention on your specific issue. Group sessions provide community support and the opportunity to learn through others' experiences. Your comfort level with vulnerability should guide your choice.

How long is a Horse Work session?

Individual sessions run 120 minutes. Group sessions last 3-4 hours. Remote sessions typically take 75 minutes.
